Theme
Choose how Root looks on your device. Your theme saves to your account, so it follows you to every device you sign in on.
Root comes with these built-in themes:
- Root dark
- Light
- Dark
- OLED, a true black theme that is easier on the eyes in the dark and saves battery on phones with OLED screens.
- Match system (System on mobile), which matches your device's light or dark setting.
You can also create your own custom theme, either a solid theme or a gradient theme, or import one that has been shared with you.
Change your theme
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select your profile picture in the user tray.
- Select Settings.
- Select Theme.
- Select your preferred theme.
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Under App theme, select your preferred theme.
Sync your theme across devices
Your theme syncs to your account, so it follows you to every device you sign in on. To use a different theme on just one device, turn off Same theme on all devices on the Theme screen (Sync across devices on mobile), then pick a theme for that device only.
Create a custom theme
Design your own theme and save it to your account. You can build a solid theme, with a color for each part of the app, or a gradient theme that blends colors across the background.
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select your profile picture in the user tray.
- Select Settings.
- Select Theme.
- Under Your themes, select New theme, then choose Solid theme or Gradient theme.
- In Customize your theme, give your theme a Name and set it up:
- For a solid theme, choose a Base Theme to start from, then set the colors in each group: Brand, Text, Background, UI, Status, Other, and Mentions.
- For a gradient theme, choose a dark or light Appearance, pick your Colors (select + Add Color to blend in more, up to 5 colors), and adjust Gradient Direction and Color Intensity. Select Surprise Me! to try a random combination, or Reset to start over. To set the brand, text, link, and mention colors yourself, switch to the Palette tab, or select Match Gradient there to pick accent colors from your gradient.
- Select Apply to use your theme.
To keep a copy of a theme, select the export icon at the bottom of the customizer. It saves the theme to your device, so you can import it again later. To bring a saved theme back in, select Import next to New theme.
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Tap the + at the top of the Theme screen, then tap Create theme.
- Under Start from, choose a starting point: Surprise me for a random gradient, a built-in theme, or one of your own themes to copy.
- In Customize theme, give your theme a Name, choose a dark or light Appearance, then set it up under Colors:
- On the Gradient tab, turn Gradient background on for a gradient theme, or off for a solid theme. Pick the gradient colors in the Colors section (tap the + to blend in more, up to 5 colors), then tap Direction and intensity to adjust Gradient direction and Color intensity.
- On the Palette tab, tap a group such as Text or Mentions, then tap a color to change it. Use the color picker or type a 6 digit hex code, and drag the Opacity slider to make the color more or less see through. On a gradient theme, tap Match gradient to pick accent colors from your gradient.
- Tap Save, then choose Save & apply to switch to the theme now, or Just save to keep your current theme. If you are editing the theme you are already using, Save updates it immediately.
To bring in a theme file, such as one you made on desktop, tap the +, then tap Import theme. To keep a copy of a theme or send it to someone, tap the options icon next to the theme, then tap Share. On Android 10 and later, you can also tap Save to Downloads to save the theme file to your device.
On a gradient theme, some colors on the Palette tab are marked Set by the gradient. The gradient chooses those for you, so they cannot be changed.
On desktop, you can zoom in and out using keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl + Plus to zoom in, Ctrl + Minus to zoom out, and Ctrl + 0 to reset (Cmd on Mac). The zoom level ranges from 50% to 200%. You can also set it with Interface zoom in Accessibility settings.
