Accessibility
Make Root easier to read and use: change the text size, spacing and zoom, choose how role colors show, and reduce motion.
Open Accessibility settings
- Select your profile picture in the user tray.
- Select Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
A Live preview at the top of the page shows sample messages, so you can see each change as you make it. Changes take effect straight away.
Accessibility settings are on desktop, and they're saved on this computer only. On mobile, you can turn on reduced motion in General settings.
Quick setups
Pick a quick setup to change several settings at once. You can still adjust each setting afterwards.
| Quick setup | What it does |
|---|---|
| Standard | Puts every setting on this page back to Root's default, including Interface zoom (100%) |
| Easy reading | Chat text 18px, underlined links, Roomy list spacing, Comfortable messages, and 24px group spacing |
| Compact | Chat text 14px, Tight list spacing, Compact messages, and no extra group spacing |
| Calm | Turns on Reduce motion, and stops GIFs and animated emoji from playing |
Reading
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Chat text size | The size of text in chat, from 12px to 24px. The default is 15px. Names, timestamps, replies, emoji and reactions get bigger or smaller with it. |
| Underline links | Underlines links in messages, so they're easier to spot. |
Layout
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Message style | Comfortable (the default) shows the avatar and name above each group of messages. Compact puts the name on the same line as the message and leaves out avatars, so more messages fit on screen. |
| Group spacing | Extra room when someone new starts talking, from 0px to 24px. The default is 16px. Changing Message style sets it again: 0px for Compact, 16px for Comfortable. |
| List spacing | Row height in channel, member and direct message lists: Tight, Default or Roomy. |
| Interface zoom | Makes all of Root bigger or smaller, from 50% to 200%. The default is 100%. The zoom applies to all of Root's windows, including popped out tabs and Mod mode, but not the game overlay. |
You can also zoom with your keyboard: press Ctrl + Plus to zoom in, Ctrl + Minus to zoom out, and Ctrl + 0 to go back to 100% (Cmd on Mac).
Color
Role colors sets how members' role colors show in chat and member lists:
- On names (the default): names show in their role color.
- As a dot: names stay in the normal text color, with a small dot in the role color.
- Off: no role colors.
Motion
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reduce motion | Replaces slides, zooms and bounces with simple fades. Match system (the default) follows your computer's own reduce motion setting. Choose On or Off to set it for Root only. |
| Autoplay GIFs | Plays GIFs and animated images while Root is the window in use. |
| Animated emoji | Plays emoji animations in messages, reactions and the emoji picker. |
When Reduce motion is on, GIFs and animated emoji stop playing too, unless you've changed those settings yourself. Root shows Paused by Reduce motion under each one. To play them anyway, turn on Autoplay GIFs or Animated emoji. If you change Reduce motion later, these two go back to following it.
