Audio and video
Configure your microphone, speakers, and camera for voice and video calls.
Select your microphone
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under Input device, select your microphone from the dropdown.
Root uses your device's default microphone. To change microphones, connect a different audio device (like headphones with a built-in mic) and Root will automatically detect it.
Select your speakers

- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under Output device, select your speakers or headphones from the dropdown.
Root uses your device's default audio output. Connect headphones or external speakers to automatically switch audio output.
Select your camera
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under Video settings > Camera, select your webcam from the dropdown.
Root uses your device's camera. During a video call, you can switch between front and back cameras using the Flip camera icon (camera with circular arrows).
Adjust input volume
Control your microphone volume level.

- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under Audio settings > Input device, adjust the Input volume slider.
The slider ranges from 0% to 100%. Higher values increase your microphone sensitivity.
Input volume settings are not available on mobile. Your device uses its default microphone level.
Adjust output volume
Control your speaker volume level. You can boost the output volume beyond 100% for quieter audio sources.

- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under Audio settings > Output device, adjust the Output volume slider.
The slider ranges from 0% to 200%. Values above 100% amplify the audio output.
Output volume settings are not available on mobile. Use your device's volume controls.
Adjust noise suppression
Control how aggressively background noise is filtered from your microphone.

- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Audio and video.
- Under MICROPHONE CONFIGURATION, adjust the Noise suppression strength slider.
Higher values filter out more background noise but may affect voice clarity. Lower values preserve more natural sound but allow more ambient noise through.
Noise suppression settings are not available on mobile.
Adjust individual user volume
During a voice call, you can adjust the volume of individual participants without affecting your global audio settings.
- Desktop

- Right-click on a user in the voice call.
- In the context menu, adjust the User volume slider to control their voice volume.
The slider ranges from 0% to 200%, allowing you to boost quieter users or reduce louder ones. Your volume preferences for each user are saved and applied automatically in future calls.
- During a voice call, long-press on a participant's video tile.
- Adjust the volume slider to control their voice volume (0-200%).
To mute a user, check Mute below the slider. Your volume preferences for each user are saved and applied automatically in future calls.
Adjust screen share audio volume
When someone is sharing their screen with audio, you can adjust the volume of their screen share separately from their voice.

- Right-click on a user who is screen sharing in the voice call.
- In the context menu, adjust the Stream volume slider to control their screen share audio.
The slider ranges from 0% to 100%. Your volume preferences are saved and applied automatically in future calls.
Screen share audio volume controls are not available on mobile.
