Sudo FAQs
Answers to common questions about Sudo, including perks, billing, and managing your subscription.
General
What is Sudo?
Sudo is Root's subscription. It's a way to support Root while it's being built, and it comes with a set of perks that are available as long as your subscription is active.
What do I get with Sudo?
- HD streaming: stream your screen at up to 1440p (2K) and 60fps, with adjustable FPS (15, 30, or 60) and resolution (720p, 1080p, or 1440p)
- Sudo supporter badge: a purple badge shown on your profile below your username, visible to others when they view your profile
We may add new perks over time, so your Sudo lineup grows as Root does.
Is Sudo available on all platforms?
Not yet. For now, you need Root on desktop to subscribe, manage your subscription, and use Sudo features.
Billing and payment
When will I be charged?
You're charged as soon as your subscription starts. After that, you're charged again at the start of each billing period (monthly or yearly), plus any taxes that apply, until you cancel. Your subscription renews automatically.
What payment methods are accepted?
Root accepts all major credit and debit cards via Stripe.
Is it safe to pay through Root?
Yes. Root uses Stripe, a trusted payment provider, to handle all card payments. Your card details are sent securely to Stripe and stored safely there. Root never sees or keeps your full card number.
Does Root store my payment details?
No. Your card is held securely by Stripe, Root's payment provider. Root keeps only your card's brand and last 4 digits, so you can recognize it when you choose how to pay.
What happens if my payment is declined?
The failed payment appears in your transaction history with a Failed status, and you'll receive an email if there are any issues with your payment. Root may automatically try the payment again a few times, and may charge a backup payment method if you've added one. Until the payment goes through, your Sudo perks may be paused or limited. To fix it, add or update a payment method in billing settings.
Can I upgrade from monthly to yearly?
There's no option to switch billing intervals while your subscription is active. To move to a yearly plan, cancel your current monthly subscription, wait for it to end, then resubscribe and select Yearly.
Can I downgrade from yearly to monthly?
There's no option to switch billing intervals while your subscription is active. To move to a monthly plan, cancel your current yearly subscription, wait for it to end, then resubscribe and select Monthly.
Will the price of Sudo change?
We have no plans to change the price of Sudo at this time. If the price does change, we'll give you advance notice, and any increase would apply from your next renewal. If you don't agree to a new price, you can cancel before your subscription renews. If your subscription lapses and you resubscribe later, the price in effect at that time applies and is shown before you confirm.
Can I get a refund?
Payments for Sudo are generally final, and there's no self-service refund option in the app. If you cancel, you keep your perks until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, but that period isn't refunded. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law. For full details, see the Root Terms of Use.
Managing your subscription
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Sudo.
- Select Manage subscription.
- Select Cancel subscription.
A confirmation screen shows the date your access ends before you confirm.
What happens to my perks when I cancel?
Your perks stay active until the end of your current billing period. Root shows the access end date on the Sudo settings page and your subscription status changes to ENDING.
Can I resubscribe after cancelling?
Yes. A Resubscribe button appears on the Sudo settings page after you cancel and stays visible until your access ends. If you resubscribe before your billing period ends, you won't be charged until your next renewal date, and your existing plan and payment method are reinstated. If your access has already ended, resubscribing uses the price in effect at that time, shown before you confirm.
How do I remove my payment method?
- Go to Settings, then Billing.
- Select the options button (three dots) next to the card you want to remove.
- Select Remove.
You cannot remove your last saved payment method.
How do I view my transaction history?
- Go to Settings, then Billing.
- Select View transaction history.
