What is a community level?
A community level is a measure of how many cores members have assigned to your community. A core is a power-up that a member with a Sudo subscription can give to a community. One core makes the community level 1, two cores make it level 2, and so on.
Levels are earned by your members, not bought by the community. Any member can assign a core, and cores from different members all count towards the same total.
What each level unlocks
Communities can reach level 10.
| Level | What it unlocks |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 app or bot slot |
| 2 | A vanity invite link, plus another app or bot slot |
| 3 | Another app or bot slot |
| 4 | A Community Discovery listing (coming soon), plus another app or bot slot |
| 5 to 10 | Another app or bot slot at each level |
Every core adds one app or bot slot, so a higher level means you can install more apps. See Install apps.
The other benefits unlock at the level shown and stay unlocked while the community keeps that many cores. Above level 4, each level currently adds another app or bot slot. More benefits for the higher levels are planned.
A community at level 10 gets a shimmer on its level badge, so members can spot a fully powered community at a glance.
View your community's level
Everyone in the community can see the level badge, so members can see what the community has unlocked.
- Desktop
- Mobile
Select the level badge at the top of the members panel, on the left.
The Level up the community panel shows your current level, the next level, and what each one unlocks.
- Tap the community name at the top of the screen.
- Tap the level badge.
The screen shows your current level, the next level, and what each one unlocks.
View cores and contributors
The community's Cores page shows every core assigned to the community, who contributed it, and how many app or bot slots are still free.
- Manage Communityview the community's cores
- Manage Appsview the community's cores
Either permission is enough.
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select the community image in the sidebar.
- Select Community settings.
- Select Cores.
The page shows your level, how many cores are available for apps & bots, and an Unlocked benefits list. If a core is due to leave and that would take you below the number of apps you have installed, a warning appears here.
- Tap the community name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Community settings.
- Tap Cores.
The page lists Unlocked benefits and Contributors, and flags any core that is leaving or moving, with the date.
Members can take a core back or move it elsewhere, which lowers your level and can remove a benefit for everyone. Those changes are not immediate: they take effect at the start of that core's next billing cycle, so you get some warning. The Cores page flags any core that is due to leave, with the date.
If your community loses a core
Losing a core lowers your community's level. If that leaves you with fewer app or bot slots than you have apps installed, one of those apps is suspended.
A core can go for a few reasons: a member unassigns it, a member moves it to another community, or a member's Sudo subscription ends.
What a suspended app looks like
A suspended app stops working, but its data is kept for now. A message is posted in the community, and community owners get an email.
What you see in the app depends on the platform.
- Desktop
- Mobile
- The channel shows a red dot and App suspended in the channel list
- Opening the app's settings shows an APP SUSPENDED warning
The warning covers two different situations: the community not having enough cores, and the app being under maintenance. Only the first one deletes anything. If you got an email about a lost core, it's that one, and the deadline in the email applies.
- The channel shows Suspended in the channel list
- Tapping it shows This app is temporarily suspended. This can happen when the community is low on cores or while the app is undergoing maintenance.
Like desktop, that message covers two situations, cores and maintenance, and only the cores one deletes anything. It also doesn't show the deletion date. If you got an email about a lost core, it's the cores one, and the deadline in the email applies.
The email tells you the exact date and time. If you do nothing before then, the app and its data are permanently deleted. This cannot be undone.
Restore a suspended app
To bring the app back, restore your community's capacity before the deadline in the email. Either:
- Get a core back, by asking a member to assign one, or
- Have the member whose subscription lapsed reactivate it
Once the community has enough cores again, the app is restored and starts working. There's nothing to reinstall.
If you're close to your app or bot slot limit, it's worth removing an app you don't use before you lose a core. That way you choose which app goes, rather than finding out by email.
Encourage members to power up your community
If your community has no cores yet, the Cores page explains that members can power it up from the community's level badge. Point members at the badge rather than at settings, since assigning a core does not need any permission.
Members need a Sudo subscription to have a core to give. See Cores overview.
