Passkeys

Use passkeys to sign in to Root with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN instead of a password.

What are passkeys?

A passkey is a sign-in credential stored on your device. Instead of typing a password, you authenticate using the method you already use to unlock your device (your fingerprint, face, or PIN). Because passkeys are tied to your device, they can't be guessed or stolen.

How passkeys work

When you add a passkey, Root creates a credential linked to that specific device. To sign in, your device verifies your identity locally and Root confirms the result. You can add multiple passkeys, one for each device you use, and give each a name so you can tell them apart.

Passwords and passkeys

Your password and passkeys can coexist. After adding a passkey, you have the option to remove your password and sign in using your passkey or recovery codes instead. You can always set a password again later.

Recovery codes

When you add your first passkey, Root automatically generates recovery codes. Store them somewhere safe. If you ever lose access to all your devices, recovery codes let you get back into your account.

Add a passkey

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Select Add Passkey.
  5. Verify your identity.
  6. In the Name your passkey field, enter a name for the passkey.
  7. Select Continue.
  8. Follow your device's prompts to complete setup.

When the passkey is ready, you see "Passkey added successfully." If this is your first passkey, Root automatically generates recovery codes.

Sign in with a passkey

  1. On the sign-in screen, enter your username in the Username field.
  2. Select Log in with Passkey.
  3. Follow your device's prompts.

Rename a passkey

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Select the three-dot menu next to the passkey.
  5. Select Rename.
  6. Update the name in the Name field.
  7. Select Continue.

Delete a passkey

You cannot delete your last passkey if your account has no password. Set a password before deleting it.

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Select the three-dot menu next to the passkey.
  5. Select Delete.
  6. Verify your identity.

Remove your password

After adding a passkey, you can remove your password so your account uses your passkey and recovery codes for sign-in instead.

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Select Remove Password.
  5. Verify your identity.

Manage recovery codes

Recovery codes let you access your account if you lose all your passkeys. Each code can only be used once. Store them somewhere safe.

View your recovery code status

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Scroll to the Recovery Codes section to see your current status.

Generate or regenerate recovery codes

  1. Select your profile picture in the user tray.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Passkeys.
  4. Scroll to the Recovery Codes section.
  5. Select Generate Recovery Codes if you have no codes, or Regenerate Recovery Codes to replace your existing ones.
caution

Regenerating your codes replaces all existing ones. Any previously saved codes will no longer work.

Copy your recovery codes

After generating or regenerating codes, copy them before dismissing the screen.

  1. Select Copy All to copy all codes to your clipboard.
  2. Save the codes somewhere safe outside of Root.
  3. Select Done to dismiss the codes.
caution

Save your codes before selecting Done. They will not be shown again after you dismiss this screen.
