Discover communities

Browse public communities on Root and join the ones you like, no invite needed.

What is Community Discovery?

Community Discovery is a directory of public communities on Root. Every community listed there has chosen to be found: its owner turned listing on and met Root's requirements for a public listing. You can browse by category, search by name, and join with one tap.

The directory lives on the Explore page on desktop and the Community discovery screen on mobile.

Root's own verified communities appear at the top of the same page. These are official communities run by Root, marked with the verification badge .

Open Community Discovery

Desktop

1. Open a new tab.
2. Select Explore communities (rocket icon).
3. The Explore page opens on the Communities tab.

Mobile

1. Open the community drawer by swiping right, or by tapping the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
2. Tap the Discover icon (rocket) in the drawer header.

tip

On mobile, tap the Info icon (i) in the header for a short guide to browsing, joining, and listing your own community.

Browse and search communities

Each community card shows the community's name, category, member count, level, and a short description. If you're already a member, the card shows a Joined tag.

Desktop

• Filter by category: select a category pill above the list. All shows every listed community.
• Search: type in the Search communities box. Search matches community names and descriptions.
• Sort: choose Highest level or Most members. The list sorts by highest level by default.
• See more results: select Load more at the bottom of the list.

Mobile

• Filter by category: tap a category pill under the header. All shows every listed community.
• Search: type in the Search communities field in the header. Search matches community names and descriptions.
• Sort: tap Highest level or Most members. The list sorts by highest level by default.
• See more results: tap Load more at the bottom of the list.

The categories are Gaming, Music, Education, Technology, Art & Creative, Sports, and Social.

If nothing matches, you'll see No communities found. Try a different search term or category.

Join a community from Discovery

Desktop

1. Select a community card.
2. Review the community's details in the Join this community panel.
3. Select Join.

Mobile

1. Tap a community card.
2. Review the community's details in the Join this community sheet.
3. Tap Join.

The community opens as soon as you've joined. If you're already a member, selecting the card opens the community instead. On mobile, the sheet shows Open community instead of Join.

Some communities have extra rules for joining, and these still apply when you join from Discovery:

• Age restriction: if the community is for people 18 or older, a prompt asks you to confirm your age before you join. See Age restrictions.
• Verified email: if the community only accepts members with a verified email address, you're asked to verify yours first. See Verify your email address.

Join a verified community

Root's verified communities show under Verified communities on the same page.

Desktop

1. Open the Explore page and select the Communities tab.
2. Under Verified communities, select the community you want to join.
3. Select Accept Invite.

Mobile

1. Open the Community discovery screen.
2. Under Verified communities, tap the community you want to join.
3. Tap Accept invite to join, or Cancel to go back.

What happens when you join?

When you join a community through Discovery:

• You receive the Everyone role automatically
• You can see all channels available to the Everyone role
• The community appears in your community list
• You can take part in conversations and voice channels based on your permissions
