Assign yourself a role
Add and remove certain community roles yourself, whenever you like.
What are self assignable roles?
Some communities let you give yourself certain roles. A self assignable role is one you can add to or remove from yourself without asking a community leader, so you can opt into things like notification pings, game or interest tags, or a name color you choose. Leaders decide which roles work this way. See Self assignable roles for how leaders set them up.
Add a role to yourself
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Open your profile card by selecting your name on one of your messages, or your name in the member list.
- In the Roles section, select Add role (plus icon).
- Select a self assignable role to add it to yourself.
- Open your profile card by tapping your name on a message, or your name in the member list.
- Tap Manage roles in the Roles section.
- Turn on the self assignable roles you want.
Remove a role from yourself
- Desktop
- Mobile
Do either of the following:
- In the Roles section of your profile card, select the role, then select the X.
- Select Add role (plus icon), then deselect the roles you no longer want.
- Open your profile card by tapping your name on a message, or your name in the member list.
- Tap Manage roles in the Roles section.
- Turn off the roles you no longer want.
On desktop or mobile, anywhere you see a role mention (the colored @role name in a message), select it to open a small card. If the role is self assignable, you can choose Add me to this role or Remove me from this role right from there.
When you give yourself several roles, your name color comes from the first one you add. Choosing which role sets your color needs the Manage Roles permission, so if you don't have it, the only way to change your color is to remove your roles and add them back in the order you want.
