Self assignable roles

Let your members add and remove certain roles themselves, no admin needed.

What are self assignable roles?

A self assignable role is a role that any member can add to or remove from themselves, even without the Manage Roles permission. You choose which roles are self assignable. Every other role can only be assigned by someone with permission.

Self assignable roles work well for things members opt into, like notification pings, game or interest tags, or a color they pick for themselves. The default EVERYONE role cannot be made self assignable.

Make a role self assignable

Turn on self assignment for any role, new or existing, so members can add or remove it on their own. The Role is self assignable toggle lives on the role's Display tab.

Desktop

1. Right-click the community tab, or select the community image in the sidebar.
2. Select Community settings.
3. Select Roles from the left navigation.
4. Select the role you want to change.
5. On the Display tab, turn on Role is self assignable.
6. Select Save changes.

Mobile

1. Tap the community name at the top of the screen to open the community menu.
2. Tap Community settings.
3. Tap Roles.
4. Tap the role you want to change.
5. On the Display tab, turn on Role is self assignable.
6. Tap Save changes.

Once enabled, any member can add or remove this role from themselves.

When you create a role, the same Role is self assignable toggle appears on the Display tab, so you can turn it on as you set the role up. See Manage roles for the full create and edit steps.

Add a role to yourself

When a community has self assignable roles, you can add them to yourself without any special permission.

Desktop

To add a role to yourself:

1. Open your profile card by selecting your name on one of your messages, or your name in the member list.
2. In the Roles section, select Add role (plus icon).
3. Select a self assignable role to add it to yourself.

Mobile

To add a role to yourself:

1. Open your profile card by tapping your name on a message, or your name in the member list.
2. Tap Manage roles in the Roles section.
3. Turn on the self assignable roles you want.

Remove a role from yourself

Take off any self assignable role you no longer want.

Desktop

Do either of the following:

• In the Roles section of your profile card, select the role, then select the X.
• Select Add role (plus icon), then deselect the roles you no longer want.

Mobile

1. Open your profile card by tapping your name on a message, or your name in the member list.
2. Tap Manage roles in the Roles section.
3. Turn off the roles you no longer want.

Add yourself from a role mention

On desktop or mobile, anywhere you see a role mention (the colored @role name in a message), select it to open a small card. If the role is self assignable, you can choose Add me to this role or Remove me from this role right from there.

Your color comes from one role

When you give yourself several roles, your name color comes from the first one you add. Choosing which role sets your color needs the Manage Roles permission, so if you don't have it, the only way to change your color is to remove your roles and add them back in the order you want.
