Import a Discord server template
You can create a new community using your existing Discord server structure.
When you import a Discord server template, Root recreates your roles, channels, and channel groups so you can get started quickly without setting everything up from scratch.
What is a Discord server template?
A Discord server template is a shareable blueprint of your Discord server's structure. It includes roles, channels, and categories but not members, messages, or other content.
To learn how to create a template from your Discord server, see Discord's template documentation.
Before you start
You need a Discord server template URL. The URL looks like this: https://discord.new/abc123
Import a template
- Desktop
- Mobile
- Select the + button in the tab bar at the top of the screen.
- Select Create community.
- Select Import from Discord.
- Paste your Discord template URL in the input field.
- Select Import.
- After the template loads, the community name auto-fills with your Discord server name. You can change it.
- Choose a community color and upload a community image (optional).
- Select Create to finish.
Importing Discord templates is not available on mobile.
What gets imported
| Discord element | Root equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Server name | Community name | Auto-fills, but you can change it |
| @everyone role | EVERYONE role | Permissions from Discord's @everyone are applied to Root's EVERYONE role |
| Other roles | Roles | Includes name, color, and permissions |
| Categories | Channel groups | Structure preserved |
| Text channels | Text channels | Name, description, and position preserved |
| Voice channels | Voice channels | Name and position preserved |
| Permission overwrites | Access rules | Channel-specific role permissions |
What doesn't get imported
- Members and member roles
- Message history
- Files and attachments
- Custom emojis and stickers
- Bots and webhooks
- Server settings (verification level, etc.)
- Integrations
- The default Admins role
Permission mapping
Discord permissions are automatically converted to the closest Root equivalents. Some Discord permissions don't have a direct match in Root and are skipped.
For example:
- Discord's Administrator becomes Root's Full Control
- Discord's Manage Server becomes Root's Manage Community
- Discord's Kick Members becomes Root's Kick
After importing, review your roles to verify the settings match your expectations.
