Share files and images

Share files, images, and other media right in a text channel.

Upload a file

Desktop

1. Select the Attach Files icon in the message field.
2. Choose the file from your computer.
3. Optionally, add a message.
4. Press Enter to send.

You can also drag and drop files directly into the message field.

Mobile

1. Tap the plus button on the left of the message field.
2. Choose a source from the list: Camera to take a new photo, Photo & Video Library to pick from your gallery, or Files to browse your files.
3. Optionally, add a message.
4. Tap the Send icon .

Past 10 items, Root shows "Cannot add more attachments. Max limit - 10."

You can attach up to 10 files to one message. Images can be up to 10 MB each and other files up to 100 MB. See Limits.

Take and share a photo

Desktop

This feature is not available on desktop. Upload photos from your computer using the Attach Files icon .

Mobile

1. Tap the plus button on the left of the message field.
2. Tap Camera.
3. Take a photo.
4. Tap Use Photo to attach it.
5. If prompted, choose whether to allow Root to save the photo to your photo library. The photo is attached to your message regardless of your choice.
6. Optionally, add a message.
7. Tap the Send icon .

View shared files

Desktop

Images display as previews in the chat. Select an image to view it full-size.

Text and code files show their first few lines in the chat, with line numbers and color for code. Select Show more to see more of the file. To open the whole file, select the Preview icon . In the file viewer, select the options button to turn Word wrap on or off, or to Copy contents.

PDFs open in Root's PDF viewer when you select the Preview icon . You can page through it with Pages, search it, zoom in and out, or select Fit to width. The PDF only downloads when you open it. A password protected PDF can't be previewed.

Other files display with a download icon. Select the file name to download it.

Mobile

Images display as thumbnails. Tap to view full-size.

Files display with their name and size. Tap a file to download and open it. On Android 10 and later, tap the download icon on the file to save it to your Downloads folder.

Send long text as a text file

On desktop, a message can be up to 10,000 characters. If you paste something longer, like a log or a block of code, Root offers to send it as a text file instead.

1. Paste the text into the message box. If it's too long for one message, the Create text file window opens. If you typed it instead, select Convert to file next to the character count.
2. Optionally, add a Title (optional). Type is set to Auto-detect, so Root works out whether it's plain text or code. You can pick a type yourself instead.
3. Check the text under Content, then select Create text file.
4. Send your message. The text file is attached to it.

To change the file before you send it, select it in the message box to open Edit text file.
