Message and app links

Share a link that takes someone straight to a message, channel, or app in Root.

A Root link is an ordinary web address (from links.rootapp.com) that opens Root and jumps whoever opens it to the exact spot you linked to. You can paste one anywhere, in another channel, a direct message, or even outside Root, and it opens in the app.

Copy a link to any message in a community channel, then share it so others can jump straight to that message. Message links work in community channels, not in direct messages.

  1. Right-click the message.
  2. Select Copy message link.

The link is copied to your clipboard, ready to paste.

For example, copy a link to your community's rules message and paste it in your welcome channel. New members can open it to jump straight to the rules, even before they have explored the rest of the community.

When you open a Root link, the app takes you to whatever the link points to:

  • A message opens its channel and scrolls to that message.
  • A channel opens that channel.
  • An app opens to the exact view the link points to.

If the link points to a different community than the one you are viewing, Root switches to that community for you. Because these are ordinary web links, they also open Root when you select them outside the app, like in a browser or another chat.

You need to be a member of the community a link points to. If you are not, the link will not take you there.

When you paste a Root link into a message, it shows as a tidy label (like the channel name) instead of a long web address, so it stays easy to read. Select the label to jump straight there.

Some apps can create their own links that point to a specific spot inside them, like a particular board or item. You do not make these yourself, you receive them, for example in a message or a notification, and opening one takes you right to that spot in the app. See What are Apps and Bots?.

An app link will not open if the app is unavailable, updating, or suspended.
