Edit and delete messages

Fix a typo or remove a message you've sent.

Edit your message

Desktop

1. Hover over your message.
2. Select the Edit message icon .
3. Make your changes in the text field.
4. Press Enter to save or Escape to cancel.

If you can't send messages in a channel, the Edit message option doesn't appear on your messages there.

tip

You can also press the Up Arrow key to quickly edit your most recent message.

Mobile

1. Long-press your message.
2. Tap Edit message.
3. Make your changes.
4. Tap the confirm icon to save, or the cancel icon to discard your changes. Both sit beside the message field.

If you can't send messages in a channel, Edit message doesn't appear on your messages there. In direct messages you can always edit.

Once a message has been edited, it is marked so others can see it changed. On mobile an edited tag appears under the message.

Delete your message

Desktop

1. Hover over your message.
2. Select the More options icon .
3. Select Delete message.
4. Confirm by selecting Delete.

tip

Hold Shift and select the Delete message icon to delete a message instantly without a confirmation dialog.

Mobile

1. Long-press your message.
2. Tap Delete message.
3. A Delete message? confirmation appears. Tap Delete.

Deleted messages cannot be recovered.
