Moderation overview
Keep your community safe and welcoming by addressing disruptive behavior and managing content.
What is moderation?
Moderation is the practice of enforcing your community's rules and maintaining a positive environment. As a community leader, you're responsible for handling conflicts, removing inappropriate content, and taking action against members who violate your guidelines.
Effective moderation helps your community thrive. When members feel safe and respected, they're more likely to participate and contribute positively.
How moderation works
Root provides tools for managing members, content, and voice channels:
| Area | Tools | Learn more |
|---|---|---|
| Member actions | Kick (temporary removal) and ban (permanent removal with block) | Kick or ban members |
| Ban management | View banned members, revoke bans | Manage banned members |
| Content | Delete messages, pin important messages | Moderate content |
| Voice channels | Mute, deafen, or remove members from voice | Moderate voice channels |
| Monitoring | Action log tracks all administrative changes | Monitor actions |
Each tool requires a specific permission. You can delegate moderation responsibilities by creating a moderator role with the appropriate permissions. See Permission reference for the complete list.
When to moderate
Moderation is about judgment. Not every situation requires action, and the right response depends on context.
Consider immediate action when:
- A member is harassing others or posting harmful content
- Someone is spamming messages or disrupting voice channels
- A member is repeatedly violating community rules after warnings
Consider a lighter approach when:
- A member makes a one-time mistake
- The issue is a misunderstanding between members
- Someone is new and may not know the rules yet
General principles:
- Act consistently - apply the same standards to everyone
- Start with warnings for minor issues before escalating
- Use kicks for repeated minor problems, bans for serious violations
- Document your reasoning when banning (use the ban reason field)
