Moderate content

Manage the messages and content in your community by deleting inappropriate messages or pinning important ones.

What is content moderation?

Content moderation is the practice of reviewing and managing the messages, media, and other content that members post in your community. As a community leader, you're responsible for keeping conversations healthy and on-topic. This includes:

  • Removing messages that violate your community's rules or guidelines
  • Pinning important messages so members can find them easily
  • Maintaining a welcoming environment for all members

Any member can delete their own messages. To delete messages posted by other members, you need the Delete Messages permission. To pin or unpin messages, you need the Manage Pinned Messages permission.

Delete a message

Remove a message from a channel. Deleted messages cannot be recovered.

Required permissions
  • Delete Messages
  1. Hover over the message you want to delete.
  2. Select the more options menu ().
  3. Select Delete message.
  4. Select Delete to confirm the action.
tip

Hold Shift and select the Delete icon (trash can) to delete a message instantly without a confirmation dialog.

Pin a message

Pinned messages are highlighted in a channel and accessible from the pinned messages list. Use pins to highlight important announcements, rules, or frequently referenced information.

Required permissions
  • Manage Pinned Messages
  1. Hover over the message you want to pin.
  2. Select the Pin icon (pushpin) in the message actions, or right-click the message and select Pin message.

The message displays a (pinned) indicator.

Unpin a message

Remove a message from the pinned messages list.

Required permissions
  • Manage Pinned Messages
  1. Hover over the pinned message.
  2. Select the Unpin message icon (pushpin) in the message actions, or right-click the message and select Unpin message.

View pinned messages

Each channel has its own list of pinned messages.

  1. Open the channel.
  2. Select the Pinned messages icon (pushpin) in the channel header.

Best practices

  • Act consistently: Apply the same standards to all members when moderating content.
  • Document your rules: Make sure your community has clear guidelines so members know what content is not allowed.
  • Use the action log: After deleting or pinning messages, you can review moderation actions in the action log.
  • Consider the context: Before deleting, consider whether a warning or conversation might be more appropriate.
  • Keep pins relevant: Regularly review pinned messages and unpin outdated content to keep the list useful.
