Kick or ban members

Remove disruptive members from your community by kicking or banning them.

Kick vs. ban

Kicking and banning are two ways to remove someone from your community. The key difference is whether they can come back.

ActionWhat happensCan they rejoin?
KickRemoves the member from the community immediatelyYes, with a new invitation
BanRemoves the member and blocks them from rejoiningNo, unless the ban is revoked

You can kick any current member of the community, as long as you have the required permission. You can also ban users who have already left the community. The exception is that you cannot kick or ban the community owner.

When to kick

Kicking is a lighter action. When you kick someone, they leave the community but are not blocked from returning. If another member sends them a new invitation, they can rejoin as if nothing happened.

Consider kicking when:

  • A member is causing minor disruptions but may improve with a second chance
  • You need to remove someone temporarily while you investigate an issue
  • A member joined by mistake or is no longer active
  • You want to give someone a warning without permanently removing them

What happens when someone is kicked

When you kick a member:

  • They are removed immediately: The member loses access to the community and all its channels.
  • They receive a notification: The kicked member is notified that they were removed from the community.
  • A system message is posted: The community's system channel displays a message announcing that the member was kicked.
  • Their messages remain: Messages the kicked member posted are not deleted.
  • They can rejoin: Unlike a ban, the kicked member can accept a new invitation and rejoin the community.

When to ban

Banning is a stronger action. When you ban someone, they are removed and cannot rejoin, even if they receive a new invitation. The only way for a banned member to return is if a leader with the Manage Bans permission revokes the ban.

Consider banning when:

  • A member has violated community rules repeatedly
  • Someone is harassing other members
  • A member is posting spam or inappropriate content
  • You need to permanently remove someone to protect the community

What happens when someone is banned

When you ban a member:

  • They are removed immediately: The member loses access to the community and all its channels.
  • They receive a notification: The banned member is notified that they have been banned, including any reason you provided.
  • A system message is posted: The community's system channel displays a message announcing that the member was banned.
  • Their messages remain: Messages the banned member posted are not deleted. If you need to remove their messages, you must delete them manually.
  • They cannot be mentioned: Since banned members are no longer part of the community, they won't appear in the mention autocomplete when composing messages.
  • Existing mentions stay visible: Any mentions of the banned member in older messages remain visible and display their username.
  • They cannot rejoin: The ban blocks them from accepting new invitations. They can only return if a leader revokes the ban.
