Manage notifications

Check, filter, and clear your notifications all in one place.

View notifications

Access your notifications to see mentions, friend requests, community invites, and other alerts.

Desktop

1. In the user tray (top-right), select the Notifications icon .
2. Your notifications appear in a panel, with the most recent at the top.
3. Hover over a notification to mark it as viewed.
4. To narrow the list, use the filter dropdown at the top: All, Mentions, Friend requests, Community Invites, or Apps & Bots.

Mobile

1. Tap the Notifications tab in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Your notifications appear in a list, with the most recent at the top.
3. About a second after the screen opens, every notification is marked as viewed, including the ones further down the list.

The Notifications tab shows a badge with the number you haven't viewed yet.

note

The badge on the Root app icon counts unviewed notifications and unread direct message conversations, so it can be higher than the number on the Notifications tab.

Filter notifications

Narrow down your notification list to focus on specific types.

Desktop

1. In the user tray (top-right), select the Notifications icon .
2. Select the filter dropdown at the top of the panel.
3. Choose a filter.

Mobile

1. Tap the Notifications tab in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Tap a filter tab at the top of the screen: All, Mentions, Friend requests, Community invites, or Apps & Bots.

Mark all notifications as viewed

Clear the unviewed indicators on all your notifications at once.

Desktop

1. In the user tray (top-right), select the Notifications icon .
2. Select the Options button in the panel header.
3. Select Mark all as viewed.

Mobile

Notifications are automatically marked as viewed when you open the notifications screen. There is no manual option to mark all as viewed.

Delete all notifications

Remove all notifications from your list. This action cannot be undone.

Desktop

1. In the user tray (top-right), select the Notifications icon .
2. Select the Options button in the panel header.
3. Select Delete all.
4. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Mobile

1. Tap the Notifications tab in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Tap the Options button in the header.
3. Tap Delete all notifications.
4. On the Delete notifications prompt, tap Delete to confirm, or Cancel to keep them.

Delete all notifications is greyed out when your list is already empty.

Respond to a notification

Some notifications can be acted on straight from the list, so you don't have to go looking for the message or the community.

Desktop

1. In the user tray (top-right), select the Notifications icon .
2. Do one of the following:
   • On a friend request or community invite, select Accept or Decline.
   • Select a mention to jump to that message in the channel or conversation.

A ban notification also shows the reason you were banned, if the community gave one.

Mobile

1. Tap the Notifications tab in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Do one of the following:
   • On a friend request or community invite, tap Accept or Decline.
   • Tap a mention to open that message. It opens in a pane on top of your notifications.
   • Swipe a mention to the left to reply to it without opening the conversation. This works while Swipe to reply is on in Chat settings.
   • Press and hold a mention to react to it or reply to it.

Accepting a community invite takes you into the community. If Root can't open a mention, it shows a short message that explains why. For example, you're no longer a member of that community, or the channel no longer exists.

Root can ask you for something before it lets you accept a community invite:

Prompt	What to do
Verify your email address	Verify your email address, then accept the invite again.
Confirm your age	Confirm you meet the community's age requirement to continue.

A ban notification also shows the reason you were banned, if the community gave one.

React or reply from a message notification

On mobile, when a message notification slides in at the top of the screen while you're using Root, you can answer it without leaving what you're doing.

1. Pull the notification down to open it. It shows more of the message, and its first image, video or GIF.
2. Do one of the following:
   • Tap a reaction, or tap the emoji button to choose any emoji.
   • Type in the reply field and send your reply. It is sent as a reply to that message. As in the message box, type @ to mention someone or a role, : and a few letters to find an emoji, or # to link a channel (in community channels only).

To close the notification, swipe it up. To open the conversation instead, tap the notification.
