Community and channel notifications

Choose how much you hear from each community, channel, and conversation, or mute one for a while.

What you can choose

Each community, channel, and direct message conversation has its own notification setting (for channels: text, voice, and app channels on desktop, text and voice channels on mobile):

SettingWhat you get
All messagesA notification for every new message
Only @mentionsMentions of you, your roles, and @all, and replies to you. In a direct message, mentions of you and @all, and replies to you.
NothingNo notifications, not even mentions

Until you choose, a community uses its Community default, which its leaders pick. A channel uses Use community setting, so it follows whatever you chose for the community. The menu shows what that currently means, for example Only @mentions (default).

tip

Busy community but one channel you never want to miss? Set the community to Only @mentions and that one channel to All messages.

Mobile push notifications

Mobile push notifications decides whether these notifications also reach your phone when the app is closed. You can turn it off for a community, channel, or conversation and still see the notifications inside Root.

In communities with more than 2,500 members, push notifications are only sent for mentions. The setting then shows Mentions only in large communities.

Change notifications for a community, channel, or conversation

  1. Right-click the community tab, a channel in the sidebar, or a conversation in your direct messages.
  2. Hover over Notification settings.
  3. Select All messages, Only @mentions, or Nothing. To go back to the default, select Community default (for a community) or Use community setting (for a channel).
  4. To stop push notifications to your phone, turn off Mobile push notifications.

Mute a community, channel, or conversation

Muting silences notifications for a while, then they come back on their own, unless you chose Until I turn it back on. Choose For 15 minutes, For 1 hour, For 3 hours, For 8 hours, For 24 hours, or Until I turn it back on.

  1. Right-click the community tab, a channel in the sidebar, or a conversation in your direct messages.
  2. Hover over Mute community, Mute channel, or Mute conversation.
  3. Choose how long to mute it for.

While it's muted, the menu shows Muted until and the time (no end time is shown if you chose Until I turn it back on). To turn notifications back on early, select Unmute community, Unmute channel, or Unmute conversation.

Muting a community also quiets all of its channels. To turn off notifications for all of Root, or change sounds and popups, see Notifications in Settings.
