Notifications overview
Stay informed about activity that matters to you across Root.
What are notifications?
Notifications are alerts that let you know when something happens in Root that involves you. When someone mentions you in a message, sends you a friend request, or invites you to a community, Root sends you a notification so you can respond.
How notifications work
Root collects notifications in a central location where you can view and manage them. Notifications appear as a list, with the most recent at the top. Unread notifications display a visual indicator so you can quickly see what's new.
When you view your notifications, Root automatically marks them as read:
- Desktop: Notifications are marked as read when you hover over them.
- Mobile: All visible notifications are marked as read after you open the notifications screen.
How notification delivery works
Root delivers notifications differently depending on your platform:
Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux): Root displays notifications while the app is running. On Windows and Linux, you can choose between Root's built-in notification popups or your operating system's native notification center. Root's built-in popups appear in a dedicated window, while native notifications integrate with your OS notification center, Do Not Disturb mode, and notification history. Desktop notifications are highly customizable with options for sounds, taskbar alerts, and notification style.
Mobile (iOS, Android): Root uses push notifications delivered through your device's notification system. Push notifications can reach you even when the app is closed. Unlike desktop, notification settings on mobile are managed through your device's system settings rather than within the Root app.
Both platforms notify you about the same types of activity, but the settings and controls differ based on what each platform supports.
Notification types
Root sends notifications for the following events:
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Mentions | Someone mentioned you in a message using @your-username |
| Friend requests | Someone sent you a friend request, or responded to a friend request you sent |
| Community invites | Someone invited you to join a community |
| Community removals | You were kicked or banned from a community |
Filter notifications
You can filter your notification list to show only specific types:
- All: Shows all notifications
- Mentions: Shows only @mention notifications
- Friend requests: Shows only friend request notifications
- Community invites: Shows only community invitation notifications
