Start a conversation

Send private messages to other Root users outside of community channels.

You can format your messages (Markdown, code blocks, mentions, etc.). See Format messages for full formatting options and examples.

Start a direct message from a community or channel

Desktop

1. Select a members's avatar from the community member list or a channel message to open their profile card.
2. You have two options:

• Type a message in the message area and hit Enter to send. A direct message conversation opens.
• Select the Send message (chat bubble) icon in their profile card to open a conversation.

Mobile

1. In the member list, tap a user's name to view their profile.
2. Tap Message.
3. Type your message and tap Send.

Start a direct message with a friend

Desktop

1. Select the Direct Messages icon (chat bubble) in the user tray (top-right of the window).
2. Select the Create direct message button (plus sign).
3. Search for a friend by name.
4. Select the friend to start a conversation.

Mobile

1. Tap Messages in the bottom navigation.
2. Tap the + (plus) icon.
3. Search for a friend and tap their name.
4. Start typing your message.
