What is Community Analytics?

Community Analytics is a community app that gives leaders insight into how their community is doing. It tracks all member activity — messages, reactions, voice time, and more — and presents it through interactive charts and metrics. You can see who your most active members are, how well you retain new members over time, and where engagement is trending up or down.

How it works

The app monitors activity across your community's channels in real time. It records events like messages sent, reactions added, voice channel joins, and file uploads, then rolls them up into daily and hourly metrics. The dashboard displays these metrics through summary cards, trend charts, heatmaps, leaderboards, and tables.

Key metrics

MetricDescription
DAUDaily Active Users — members with any activity in a calendar day.
MAUMonthly Active Users — members with activity in the last 30 days.
DAU/MAU RatioA measure of "stickiness" — how concentrated daily activity is relative to the monthly base. Higher is better.
Retention RateThe percentage of a weekly cohort that remains active in subsequent weeks.
Lurker RateThe percentage of members with minimal or no contribution.
Ghost RateThe percentage of members who joined but never contributed.
Conversion RateThe percentage of lurkers who became contributors.
Time to First MessageHow long after joining a member sends their first message.

Member lifecycle

Every member is assigned a lifecycle stage based on their recent activity pattern:

StageDefinition
NewJoined in the last 7 days.
ActiveActive in both the current and previous 7-day period.
ReturningBecame active again after a period of inactivity.
At RiskWas active but engagement is declining.
DormantInactive for 14–30 days.
ChurnedInactive for more than 30 days.

Engagement types

Members are also classified by their engagement level, calculated from a weighted activity score over a rolling 7-day window:

TypeScoreDescription
Power User100 or higherVery high activity across multiple activity types.
Regular30–99Consistent, moderate activity.
Light3–29Minimal but measurable activity.
LurkerBelow 3Previously active, now contributing very little.
GhostJoined but never contributed.
At RiskWas a power user or regular, now declining significantly.

Activity score

The activity score is the sum of each activity count multiplied by its weight over the most recent 7-day window:

ActivityWeight
Message sent1.0
Reaction0.3
Voice minute0.1
File shared3.0

For example, a member who sends 50 messages, adds 30 reactions, spends 60 minutes in voice, and shares 5 files in a week has a score of 50 + 9 + 6 + 15 = 80, placing them in the Regular tier.

Dashboard

The dashboard is the main view. It shows a comprehensive overview of community activity for a selected time period.

Date range

Use the date range picker to choose a period: Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, or Last 90 days. Enable Compare to previous period to see percentage changes alongside each metric.

Overview cards

The top of the dashboard displays summary cards for the key metrics: Daily Active Users, Monthly Active Users, DAU/MAU Ratio, Total Messages, Total Reactions, Voice Minutes, New Members, and Active Channels. When comparison is enabled, each card shows the percentage change from the previous period.

Activity trend

A line chart showing Daily Active Users over time. When comparison is enabled, a second line shows the previous period for side-by-side comparison.

Activity heatmap

A 24-hour by 7-day grid that shows when your community is most active. Darker cells indicate more activity. Times are displayed in your local timezone.

Top channels

A horizontal bar chart showing the most active channels by message count.

Top contributors

A ranked list of the members with the most messages in the selected period. Select a member to open their profile with detailed activity history.

Retention cohorts

A table showing weekly cohorts of new members and what percentage remained active in each subsequent week, up to eight weeks out. Higher retention percentages are highlighted with stronger colors.

User lifecycle

A stacked area chart showing how the community's lifecycle distribution changes over time, alongside a breakdown panel with counts for each stage and descriptions of what they mean.

Engagement analysis

A donut chart showing the distribution of engagement types across the community. Select a segment to filter the user table below it. The insights section displays the lurker rate, ghost rate, conversion rate, and average time to first message.

Member profiles

Select any member from the top contributors list or engagement table to open their profile. The profile shows:

  • Lifecycle stage and engagement type.
