Require email verification

Restrict your community to users who have verified their email address.

What is verified member access?

Verified member access is a community setting that prevents unverified users from joining. When enabled, only users who have confirmed their email address can join your community through invite links or other methods.

This helps ensure that members have valid email addresses, which can reduce spam accounts and improve community quality.

Enable or disable verified member access

  1. Right-click the community tab, or select the community image in the sidebar.
  2. Select Community settings.
  3. In the Overview section, find Verified member access.
  4. Toggle the switch on to require verification, or off to allow anyone to join.
  5. Select Save to apply your changes.

What happens when an unverified user tries to join

When verified member access is enabled and an unverified user attempts to join your community, they see a message explaining that verification is required. They cannot join until they verify their email address.

The user sees:

  • Title: Verification required
  • Message: This community requires verified users. Please verify your account to join.

When to use this setting

Consider enabling verified member access when:

  • You want to reduce spam or bot accounts
  • Your community handles sensitive topics that require accountability
  • You need a basic level of member verification for moderation purposes

You may want to leave it disabled when:

  • You want to minimize friction for new members joining
  • Your community is open and casual
  • You're running a public event where quick access matters
