Manage channels and groups

Create, edit, and delete channels and channel groups in your community.

Create a channel group​

Required permissions
  • Create Channel Groups
  1. Right-click on any open area in the channels pane.
  2. Select Create channel group.
  3. Enter the name.
  4. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who can see this group.
  5. Select Create.

Name requirements:

  • 1 to 256 characters
  • Letters, numbers, a single space, and a single apostrophe only
  • Must start and end with a letter or number

By default, new channel groups are visible to all members (EVERYONE). To make a group private, remove the EVERYONE access rule and add rules for specific roles or members.

Create a channel​

Required permissions
  • Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel group where you're creating the channel
  1. Select the + symbol next to the channel group where you want to add the channel.
  2. Enter the name.
  3. Enter the description (optional).
  4. Select the channel type (Text or Voice). App channels are coming soon.
  5. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who has access.
  6. Select Create.

Name requirements:

  • 1 to 256 characters
  • Letters, numbers, and hyphens only
  • Cannot start or end with a hyphen
  • Cannot contain consecutive hyphens (--)

Description requirements:

  • Maximum 256 characters

By default, new channels inherit permissions from their channel group. See Permission syncing for details.

Edit a channel​

Required permissions
  • Channel Full Control
  1. Right-click the channel you want to edit.
  2. Select Edit channel.
  3. Make your changes:
    • Name: The channel name shown in the channel list
    • Description: A brief description of the channel's purpose
    • Permissions: Control who can access the channel
  4. Select Save.

Edit a channel group​

Required permissions
  • Create Channel Groups
  1. Right-click the channel group name.
  2. Select Edit channel group.
  3. Make your changes:
    • Name: The group name shown in the channel list
    • Permissions: Control who can see the group and its channels
  4. Select Save.

Delete a channel​

Deletion is permanent

When you delete a channel, all messages, files, and history in that channel are permanently deleted. This cannot be undone.

Required permissions
  • Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel you're deleting
  1. Right-click the channel you want to delete.
  2. Select Delete.
  3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Delete a channel group​

When you delete a channel group, all channels inside it are also deleted. You must have Channel Full Control on the group and on every channel it contains.

Required permissions
  • Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel group and every channel inside it
  1. Right-click the channel group name.
  2. Select Delete.
  3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Before deleting​

Consider these alternatives before deleting a channel:

AlternativeWhen to use
Make it privateYou want to hide the channel from most members but keep the history. Remove the EVERYONE access rule.
Archive itMove the channel to a private "Archive" group so it's out of the way but still accessible.
Move channels firstIf deleting a group, move channels you want to keep to another group before deleting.
