Manage channels and groups

Create, edit, and delete channels and channel groups.

Create a channel group

Required permissions

• Create Channel Groups

Desktop

1. Right-click on any open area in the channels pane.
2. Select Create channel group.
3. Enter the name.
4. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who can see this group.
5. Select Create.

Mobile

1. Tap the community name at the top of the screen to open the menu.
2. Select Create channel group.
3. Enter the name.
4. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who can see this group.
5. Select Create.

Name requirements:

• 2 to 100 characters
• Letters and numbers, with at most one space and one apostrophe
• The apostrophe can only be in the first word
• Must start and end with a letter or number

By default, new channel groups are visible to all members (EVERYONE). To make a group private, remove EVERYONE from Channel Visibility and add specific roles or members.

Create a channel

Required permissions

• Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel group where you're creating the channel
• Manage AppsRequired to create an App channel

Desktop

1. Select the + symbol next to the channel group where you want to add the channel.
2. Enter the name.
3. Optionally, select the image box at the start of the name field to upload a channel icon (up to 256 KB).
4. Enter the description (optional).
5. Select the channel type (Text, Voice, or App channel).
6. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who has access.
7. Select Create.

Mobile

1. From the Home screen, select the + symbol next to the channel group.
2. Optionally, tap the image above the name to upload a channel icon (up to 256 KB).
3. Enter the name.
4. Enter the description (optional).
5. Select the channel type (Text, Voice, or App channel).
6. Optionally, select the Permissions tab to control who has access.
7. Select Create.

App channels

App channels (beta) run an interactive App in place of a message feed. To install Apps and set them up, see Install Apps and Bots.

Name requirements:

• 1 to 100 characters
• Letters, numbers, and hyphens only
• Cannot start or end with a hyphen
• Cannot contain consecutive hyphens (--)

Description requirements:

• Maximum 256 characters

By default, new channels inherit permissions from their channel group. See Permission syncing for details.

Edit a channel

Required permissions

• Channel Full Control

Desktop

1. Right-click the channel you want to edit.
2. Select Edit channel.
3. Make your changes:
   • Name: The channel name shown in the channel list
   • Description: A brief description of the channel's purpose
   • Icon: Select the image box at the start of the name field to upload a channel icon (up to 256 KB)
   • Permissions: Control who can access the channel
4. Select Save.

Mobile

1. Tap and hold the channel you want to edit.
2. Select Edit channel.
3. Make your changes:
   • Name: The channel name shown in the channel list
   • Description: A brief description of the channel's purpose
   • Icon: Tap the image above the name to upload a channel icon (up to 256 KB)
   • Permissions: Control who can access the channel
4. Tap Save changes.

Edit a channel group

Required permissions

• Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel group you're editing

Desktop

1. Right-click the channel group name.
2. Select Edit channel group.
3. Make your changes:
   • Name: The group name shown in the channel list
   • Permissions: Control who can see the group and its channels
4. Select Save.

Mobile

1. Tap and hold the channel group name.
2. Select Edit channel group.
3. Make your changes:
   • Name: The group name shown in the channel list
   • Permissions: Control who can see the group and its channels
4. Tap Save changes.

Delete a channel

Deletion is permanent

When you delete a channel, all messages, files, and history in that channel are permanently deleted. This cannot be undone.

Required permissions

• Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel you're deleting

App channels

You can't delete an App channel from the channel list. To remove it, remove its App in community settings. See Remove an App or Bot.

Desktop

1. Right-click the channel you want to delete.
2. Select Delete.
3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Mobile

1. Tap and hold the channel you want to delete.
2. Select Delete channel.
3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Delete a channel group

When you delete a channel group, all channels inside it are also deleted. You must have Channel Full Control on the group and on every channel it contains.

Required permissions

• Channel Full ControlRequired on the channel group and every channel inside it

If the group contains an App channel, desktop shows Cannot delete channel group. Move the App channel to another group, or remove the App first. See Remove an App or Bot.

Desktop

1. Right-click the channel group name.
2. Select Delete.
3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Mobile

1. Tap and hold the channel group name.
2. Select Delete channel group.
3. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Before deleting

Consider these alternatives before deleting a channel:

Alternative	When to use
Make it private	You want to hide the channel from most members but keep the history. Remove EVERYONE from Channel Visibility.
Archive it	Move the channel to a private "Archive" group so it's out of the way but still accessible.
Move channels first	If deleting a group, move channels you want to keep to another group before deleting.
